Now, the modern day flip-flop is synonymous with the Brazilian brand, Havaianas. Started in 1962 by Brazilian company Alpargatas, they are credited with popularizing the casual flip-flop culture. By 2010, more than 150 million pairs of Havaianas were being produced each year.
I was at the Havaianas Spring/Summer 2013 preview where they had a summer carnival (because Havaianas = Summer and Summer fun = Carnival) with games, popcorn, cotton candy, snacks and of course, Havaianas.
Once confined to casual wear, they have made their way into formal wear and everyday wear, apparent especially in Singapore, where the flip-flop is a staple for every Singaporean and used for almost any occasion.
I think the flip-flop should be relegated to only certain casual occasions. One thong-related thing I dislike: Women who constantly fling off their heels for flats or flip-flops, and walk around in half-formal, half-casual outfits. I think if you've worn that shoe as part of your outfit, you should commit to it.
Like how this article from the Huffington Post puts it:
"These women wear their heels for about two minutes total and the rest of the day, they're trudging around in shoes more fitting for the beach, their pants held up around their ankles with rubber bands. Therein lies the problem: The outfit they planned for the day and checked in the mirror before they left the house was a smart outfit perfectly tailored to those stylish heels. But the outfit most people will see them in throughout the day is a netherworld of messiness nobody was intended to view. While I have certain rules on the thong, when the occasion befits the humble thong, who else does fashionable flip-flops better than Havaianas?
Now, I'm not telling all women they have to wear high heels all the time. In fact, if these women never want to wear heels again, they should go right ahead. But what I can't stand are all these sloppy half-office, half-vacation outfits that seem to dominate the workplace these days. This could easily be fixed by just wearing flats."
